About ABACUS

Cooperative efforts of many dedicated individuals at the University of Alberta and Capital Health resulted in the creation of the Alberta Cardiovascular and Stroke Research Centre (ABACUS). Directed by Dr. Gary Lopaschuk and administered by Ms Donna Daniec, this $18 million, translational, research centre is funded by several federal and provincial agencies, including the Canada Foundation for Innovation.

Investigators

ABACUS will serve over 100 investigators and their trainees in Edmonton and Calgary. The lead investigators in ABACUS are internationally recognized leaders in their research fields, ranging from informatics to cardiac and neuro intervention. They hold a variety of Canada Research Chairs, direct research groups, and function as medical and scientific leaders.

Mission

The mission of this multidisciplinary faculty is to perform outstanding research aimed at the prevention, detection, and cure of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), including stroke. The research will be conducted at levels ranging from Molecules to Populations. The focused research mission provides a home for investigator-initiated research, and will also enhance patient care and contribute to the education of scientists and cardiovascular healthcare professionals.

Location

ABACUS was designed by HIP Architects (Allan Partridge) and built by Delnor Construction in level 0 of the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute. ABACUS will occupy 1800m2 on a research floor shared with a CFI-funded in University of Alberta In Vivo NMR Research Centre. Located in close proximity to a tertiary care Emergency Department and the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute, ABACUS has unparalleled capacity to support research on subjects with acute and severe cardiovascular illnesses.

Position

ABACUS is a 'research hospital within a hospital' that will enable researchers to quickly apply breakthrough therapies and revolutionary biomedical devices to patients participating in studies or clinical trials. This innovative centre will not only help patients, but also helps Canadian scientists to perform groundbreaking research and compete on the international stage. ABACUS is strategically aligned and seamlessly integrated with the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute, the University of Alberta Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry and Alberta Health Services.

Focus

ABACUS builds on Alberta's existing strengths in randomized trials in the areas of acute ischemic cardiac disease and congestive heart failure, stroke research, vascular biology, informatics, and imaging. ABACUS will focus on the following themes:

  • Myocardial Ischemia-Acute Coronary Syndromes
  • Revascularization and Neuroprotection in Stroke Endothelial Function in health and disease
  • CVD Outcomes
  • Health Delivery and Technology Assessment
  • Cardioprotection
  • Diagnostic and therapeutic modalities for Pulmonary Hypertension and Congenital Heart Disease
